Island Inspiration. Local Hands.
Behind every piece is a person, a process, and a story. Meet the artists and makers who bring their own perspective to Galveston through paintings, photography, pottery, jewelry, and handmade goods.
We’re taking a closer look at their work, the spaces where they create, and what inspires them to call this island home.

Discover the artist behind some of Galveston’s colorful walls. Gabriel Prusmack brings bold imagery and messages such as “Love Big” and “Be Free” to murals around the island. His work invites you to pause, take a closer look, and find inspiration in places you might otherwise pass by.

For wood sculptor Jim Phillips, a fallen tree can become the beginning of a new story. His carvings bring character to Galveston’s neighborhoods, while smaller sculptures transform reclaimed wood into coastal wildlife and other imaginative forms. Working with trees salvaged after Hurricane Ike, he gives pieces of the island a second life through art.

Galveston’s architecture takes on a different texture through the work of Brenda Bunten-Schloesser. Using hand-dyed fabric, she creates textile mosaics that capture the color and character of downtown buildings. Her work invites a closer look at familiar island surroundings, revealing how fabric, detail, and imagination can turn a streetscape into art.
